Description
Recipient of the Award of Garden Merit presented by the Royal Horticultural Society, Okayama Silky Wisteria Vine is adored for its 8-inch long racemes of wonderfully fragrant pea-like soft lilac flowers with deeper highlights and white centers that open from deep lilac buds in abundance in late spring to early summer. The flowers are about twice as large as other wisteria flowers. The vine can climb up to 25 feet tall, depending on the height of the support structure. The flowers contrast beautifully with the emerging golden-bronze new leaves that turn to soft green for the summer and then yellow with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall. A long-lived vine perfect for growing on arbors and pergolas, poles and fences, or on a trellis to cover a wall. A dramatic floral and exotic foliage display with wonderful sensory appeal in the landscape.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Okayama Silky Wisteria is ideal for use to grow up and over arbors, pergolas, and other over head structures that might benefit from the support of a flowering vine. Also very nice growing along the tops of fences or rails or up tall columns or posts and on trellises to cover a wall. Can also be trained to grow as a very attractive small, free-standing tree. As it often does in the wild, this wisteria can be grown up and throughout the branches of large trees without compromising the health of the tree.
Growing Preferences
Okayama Silky Wisteria is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. The more sun the better the flower production. Not picky at all about soil pH, it thrives in soils ranging from 4.5 to 8.0 on the pH scale. If desired, prune in late winter to reduce the size or for shaping purposes. Can also be lightly pruned after the spring bloom or trained to form a single-trunk tree.
