Description
‘Clara Mack’ is the white flowering selection of our North American native Kentucky Wisteria, a fast growing but more restrained vine that its Chinese cousins. In late spring it features abundant, elegant, long hanging inflorescences of fragrant white flowers. The flowers bloom in abundance all at the same time creating a dramatic floral display and sensory appeal in the landscape. Climbing 10 to 25 feet tall, depending on the height of the support structure, the vines are clothed in lush pinnate leaves that emerge light green maturing to dark green and then to yellow in fall. It is perfect for growing on a fence, arbor, pergola, pole or any other sturdy structure that will support its twining vines. Needless to say this is not a vine for the mailbox! That said, as with other wisteria species, it can be trained to form a highly attractive single or multi trunk small tree. Very easy to grow, Clara Mack thrives in full sun to half-day shade, is drought tolerant when established, and is noted for her excellent heat and cold tolerance, withstanding temperatures down to -20F.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Climbing quickly 10 to 25 feet in height or length depending on the height or length of the support structure, Clara Mack Wisteria is ideal for use to grow up and over sturdy fences and rails, arbors and pergolas, poles and columns and any other structures that will support its vines. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, white theme gardens, cottage gardens, butterfly gardens, native plant gardens and tropical-look gardens.
Growing Preferences
Because Clara Mack Wisteria is a North American native it is widely adaptable to various soil types and thrives in a wide range of pH (5.0-7.5). We suggest a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility for fastest growth, though it has good drought tolerance when established. The vine is happy in full sun or part shade however flowering will be diminished in heavy shade. If needed, prune in late winter to reduce the size. Can also be lightly pruned after bloom for shaping purposes. It can also be trained as a small tree. How To Train A Wisteria To A Tree Form
