Description
Named for its foliage color and form, the Blue Teardop is a very happy little Spruce that when all grown up might reach 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide in a tight teardrop shape perfect for use as a specimen or outdoor Christmas tree where space is limited. Its upward-reaching branches are clothed with short, striking blue-green needles. With age you’ll see small purple cones form at the stem-tips in spring. With superior cold hardiness, good drought tolerance once established, and ultra low-maintenance, Blue Teardrop aims to please as an outstanding color accent in the small to medium size garden or landscape and looks right at home and perfectly happy in a sunny rock garden.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to around 5 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, the Blue Teardrop White Spruce is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in small to medium size garden spaces. A fine evergreen accent tree in home foundation plantings and very nice in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to conifer gardens, native plant gardens, blue theme gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs when established).
Suggested Spacing: Use as a focal point specimen or spaced 6 feet or more in small groupings
Growing Preferences
The Blue Teardrop White Spruce is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water.
